Tasting: Beer and Food Event at Baltzersen’s

Friday 27th Sep 13 saw our first ticketed evening event – Scandinavian Beer and Food Tasting. We teamed up with Ake and Humphris, Harrogate’s independent beer and wine shop based on Leeds road, who sourced 7 excellent lagers and ales from Scandinavian brewers. We put on the food and the rest was history.

It was a small gathering for the first event but that allowed Des, our guest expert, plenty of opportunity to get round the tasting and discuss the beers with everyone. The beer line up (with a couple of notes from me) was as follows:

Des from Ake and Humphris leads a Scandinavian beer tasting at Baltzersen's cafe, Harrogate.

Des from Ake and Humphris leads the tasting

Crocodile, Krönleins Bryggeri (Sweden) – Lager

A light start with a lager. Nothing particularly of note to say other than most people enjoyed the drink even if it lacked any depth or talking points.

It’s Alight, Mikkeller (Denmark) – Belgian Ale

Favourite amongst the group and the lowest alcohol content of the evening.

Pale Ale, Nøgne Ø (Norway) – American Pale Ale

Reparationsbajer, Tu Øl (Denmark) – American Pale Ale

Porter, Nøgne Ø (Norway) – Porter

Split the room entirely. Had a very thick texture and strong caramel/coffee taste. Too overpowering for most of the ladies but had a few fans amongst a couple of the gentlemen.

Piscator, Mikkeller (Denmark) – Sour/Wild Ale

Mine is Bigger Than Yours, Tu Øl (Denmark) – Barley Wine

This bottle was introduced as our mystery bottle. It smelled floral in particular of elderflower and you could smell the sweetness before even tasting. A very syrupy viscous drink that lost the floral element on tasting to be replaced by more of a rich licquorice/brown sugar taste. A real treat and described by some as a dessert beer for sipping after the meal.

Scandinavian Beer Flight

For the meal Anna made meatballs with a rich meat gravy, Jansson’s Temptation (layered potatoes with cream, onion and anchovy) and roasted vegetables. Dessert was an apple crumble slice with slosh (my Grandma’s special dessert cream).

The guests who attended enjoyed the tasting and there were calls for another evening event soon. First thoughts were perhaps a Scandinavian Cheese and Wine (not Scandi wine though) evening to be held in early November. If you’d like to make sure you get the details for the next event then please do add your details below.
