The Locals’ Guide to Harrogate: Family Restaurants

It’s been an absolute pleasure researching and sharing our previous locals’ guides to Harrogate. We’ve covered independent coffee shops and pubs so far; perhaps it’s time to step back on the self-indulgence and focus on those near us. Dining out is a unique experience, and there’s no reason a parent should be confined to nights in and the odd babysitter’s assistance.

This week’s guide will therefore be covering family restaurants. There are a lot of dining options in Harrogate; it can be anything from a very adult affair to the homeliest and most familial of services, all depending on the concept behind the establishment. With this in mind, here are a few of our favourite independent places to dine out with all the family.

Al Bivio

At the bustling Al Bivio on Hornbeam Park, you can expect great Italian food and drink served in a bright and modern setting. On the bambino menu, child-friendly portions include a choice of pastas accompanied by delicious Italian sauces and a selection of pizzas. The attentive team of staff are sure to give you a warm and friendly welcome at this true Italian restaurant.

Deano’s Graze & Grill

Grazing dishes are the order of the day at Deano’s, making it a social, family dining experience. The restaurant prides itself on a laid back and friendly atmosphere. This is the place for a family gathering where you can enjoy simple, well presented and tasty dishes. The grazing platters are popular with big family groups and the kids can enjoy exploring new flavours. No need for a special kids’ menu. Just sit back, relax and enjoy.

Gianni’s Brio

Located on King’s Road in the heart of Harrogate, Gianni’s Brio opposite the Harrogate Convention Centre has been serving up authentic, Italian cuisine for all the family since 1983. It’s a popular favourite in the town, that’s for sure, and its family-friendly ethos ensures a warm welcome. Now run by his son Marco, Gianni can still be found almost every day lending a hand, along with his daughter Elena and wife Franca on busy nights. It’s a warm and vibrant venue serving up traditional Italian antipasti, pastas, pizzas as well as fresh fish and meat dishes inspired by the different regions of Italy. And an added bonus is that kids under 10 eat free every Saturday lunch time, Saturday evening before 6.30pm and Sunday all day.

Galo’s Kitchen

New to the Harrogate Indie scene, Galo’s Kitchen has recently opened in the Montpellier Quarter. It’s a family-run, modern Italian specialising in home-cooked dishes. Between them all, the staff have over 20 years’ experience in Italian cooking. Here, it’s all about the finest, freshest ingredients and home cooked cuisine. The kids can make their own pizza or pasta dish with a choice of two different shapes and sauces. For the grown-ups the choice of dishes won’t disappoint. We like the sound of Linguine AI Frutti de Mare, Rigatoni Alla Luganica and Linguine AI Gamberi E Pistacchio.

Caffe Marconi

Cafe by day serving a selection of cakes, sandwiches, ciabattas and drinks. From midday a lunch and evening menu is served including delicious thin based pizzas all provided in a relaxed and cheerful atmosphere. The kids’ meal is great value and the staff are always happy to help. At 5pm the lights are turned down for some evening ambience and lots of families can be found enjoying their pizzas and meals in this welcoming venue.
