Simple ways to have more hygge in your life this Christmas

It’s all too easy during the hectic festive season to get bogged down in to-do lists, shopping, cooking, wrapping and more. It’s a busy time of year and here at Baltzersen’s we have been thinking of ways to embrace the hygge this Christmas to help us all appreciate this very special time, rather than just feeling stressed out by it.

Here are our top tips for spreading some Scandi festive cheer during the holidays and beyond.

hygge at Christmas

Nothing creates a warm and cosy atmosphere like exquisite candlelight and it’s a great way to give your home that hygge feeling, especially when it’s cold and dark outside. The Scandinavians are masters at brightening up even the harshest of winter weather with wonderful, rustic candle displays to give a welcoming ambience even on the coldest of days.

The Scandi Christmas look is sure to appeal to those looking to escape from the ice and add a sprinkling of style to their home. Evergreen branches, garlands, pinecones, handmade wreaths, twigs and twinkling lights will all combine to create a warm and contented feeling. Take cuttings from your garden and create your own displays or invest in some new rustic wooden decorations.

Friends & Family

Sharing a festive dinner with family and friends at home, eating out together and just enjoying each other’s company is another good way to get the hygge vibe. Take a break from all the shopping and call in to see us for a warming drink and a festive bite to get you in the Christmas mood.

Enjoy the simple things

Try to forget about the stresses of organising Christmas and take time out to enjoy a few of the simple things in life. It might be snuggling up in your cosy slippers to watch a Christmas film, wrapping up for a walk at Harlow Carr or reading a book with a hot chocolate by the warmth of the log burner. Hygge is all about balance, so reward yourself with something special when you’ve ventured out into the cold!

Get cosy

It’s fair to say many of us will already have embraced the hygge but why not go all out and make a few small changes to your home décor to make it even cosier? We’re thinking knitted blankets, cushions, sheepskin throws and rugs in neutral and earthy shades. And don’t forget the candles we mentioned earlier. These finishing touches make it easy to add more hygge into your life by making your home look warm, inviting and appealing when it’s cold and wintry outside.
